Formed May 24, 1989, the Santa Rita UWCD has an aerial extent of approximately 1,175 miles or 751,886 acres of land, minus 65,350 acres of Reagan County, which was annexed into the Glasscock GCD in 1988 making the northern portion of the county a patch work of the two districts.
The Edwards Trinity (Plateau) Aquifer is the main source of groundwater in Reagan County. The Dockum Aquifer also occurs in the District but the water quality is generally poor and very hard. Groundwater from this aquifer is generally used for irrigation and oilfield waterflooding operations.
The overall objectives of this District are to maintain local individual control of the underground water supply, to gather data, and to create awareness of the need to manage for a better water supply. SRUWCD provides information regarding the conservation, preservation/protection, recharge and prevention of waste of the underground water reservoirs.
